Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Updates For Canyon Creek School

From Our Staff!

School Update (4-28-20)

Dear Canyon Creek Parents, We are reaching out to you today to let you know about the packet pickup and dropoffs for the remainder of the school year. At our April 20th board meeting, the board of trustees voted to continue the remainder of the school year online or with packets. We know this time of year can be very busy and we want to make sure you can plan ahead for your student(s) school work. This Friday, May 1st we will have the pickup and drop off from 3:00-6:30. We ask that you come at whatever time is most convenient for you. Our next packet pickup and school work drop off will be Tuesday, May 19th. This will be a mandatory pick up for all students. We will have all of their locker, desk, and personal items in a bag ready for pick up. We will also have our lost and found items outside for you to look through. This mandatory pick up will be from 4:00-8:00. Again, we ask that you come at the time that is most convenient for you. Our final packet drop off will be Wednesday, May 27th. This will be another mandatory drop off for all students. We will need all the school materials; Chromebooks, classroom novels, library books, school work, etc. be turned in at this time. This final mandatory drop off will be from 3:00-7:00. Again, we ask that you come to the school at any time that is convenient for you. Keep in mind that we will continue to be practicing social distancing during these pickup sessions. We will have a series of X’s on the sidewalk that we will ask you to stand on while you move up to the front door as the line continues. We have had some families request that we scan, mail, or deliver the work. Unfortunately, we are not doing this because to accommodate every individual exceeds our ability to provide an efficient service. We will do our best to keep people safe and only one person will be allowed to pick up the work. We want to thank all of you for the support you have provided to the school and students. We appreciate all of you! Please call if you have any questions. 406-656-4471. See you Friday!

School Update (3/24/2020)

We have a couple updates and reminders for you during this time. First of all, just a reminder that we have the packet pick up tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25th. K-2 is from 2:00pm-3;00pm, 3-5 is from 3:15pm-4:15pm, and 6-8 is from 4:30pm-5:30pm. There is an alternate time available from 5:30pm-6:30pm for are parents who absolutely cannot make the above mentioned time. As we are trying to limit exposure please only have 1 parent and 1 child at the most come to the school. Also, if you have students in multiple grades please just come at one time instead of multiple times.

Next, don't forget that we have lunches for our free and reduced students every day! Pick up time is from 11:30 am till 12:30 pm in the bus parking lot. If you are unable to make it to the school for this, please give us a call and let us know so that we can help you out!

Lastly, the school closure has been extended to April 10th per Governor Bullock's announcement.

School Update (3/19/2020)

In order to best meet our community needs, we have developed a survey for you to fill out regarding online access and learning. Please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6FFTLGM to complete this survey. This will allow us to plan for further educational instruction. We have developed a tool for questions and answers. If you have questions for any staff member or administration, please fill out the survey. The appropriate staff member will then respond to you as quickly as they can. Please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5QGMCB9

The CDC also has great resources of how you can talk with your child(ren) about COVID-19. Please visit these recommendations at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/talking-with-children.html.

Meal Pickup Update (3/17/2020)

Hello Canyon Creek Families, If you have been trying to reach the school to pick up food and have not been able to leave a message, please still come to the bus lot and we will have food for you between 11:30-12:30. We are working on our voicemail issue and apologize for the inconvience.

Thank you, Haley Morales

Meal Information, Medication Pick-up (3/16/2020)

Canyon Creek Families,

Per Governor Bullock we as a district will continue to provide meals to our free and reduced families. We ask that you please call the office at 406-656-4471 and leave the names of your students who need meals by 10 am each day. This will give us a more accurate idea of the number of breakfast and lunches to prepare. Pick up of these meals will be from 11:30-12:30 each day at the bus parking lot parallel to our playground. Our meals will include a hot lunch to go and a grab and go breakfast for the morning. This will go into effect starting Tuesday, March 17th.

Also, for those students who have medication on-site that you need during the shutdown, please stop at the school during our meal pick up time of 11:30-12:30. If you need to schedule a different time please call the school and we will set up a time to meet you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding on this matter. We as a community will get through this together.

Respectfully,
Brent Lipp and Haley Morales

Covid-19 School Closure Announcement (3/15/2020)

Attention Canyon Creek Parents:

As you are aware Governor Bullock has closed all schools in the state of Montana from Monday, March 16th-Friday March 27th. Please do not send your students to school. We understand this may be a hardship for some you, but due to COVID-19 and the risks, this has to be done. We ask that you limit students’ social exposure to prevent the spread of the virus. At this time we are not providing online learning opportunities but will be working on some academic options during this two-week timeframe the governor has given us. If you are a family that is apart of our Give H.O.P.E. backpack program, we will be reaching out to you in the next 24 hours. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

Respectfully,
Brent Lipp & Haley Morales

Board Policy

One of the major responsibilities of the Board of Trustees is to develop and implement policies that guide the District towards achievement of educational goals and compliance with federal and state statutes, rules and regulations.

Proposed new policies and amendments to existing policies are presented in writing for reading and discussion at regular or special Board meetings. Interested parties may submit views, present data or arguments, orally or in writing, in support of or in opposition to proposed policy. Any written statement by a person, relative to a proposed policy or amendment, should be directed to the District Business Manager/Clerk prior to the second (2nd) reading. The final vote for adoption will take place no earlier than at the second (2nd) reading of the particular policy.

All new or amended policies are effective upon adoption, unless a specific effective date is stated in the motion for adoption. Policies, as adopted or amended, become part of the minutes of the meeting at which action was taken and also are included in the District’s policy manual. Policies of the District are reviewed annually by the Board.

The District Business Manager/Clerk maintains a current policy manual which includes all policies of the District. Staff, students, and community residents have ready access to District policies. However, all policy manuals distributed to anyone are the property of the District and are subject to recall at any time.

Board Meeting Minutes

Current Board Minutes are posted below along with archived editions.

Approved board meeting minutes are available to read at any time in the Business Manager/Clerk's office.

District History

From our early beginnings to present times, our focus has always been on providing a safe atmosphere and a quality education. The timeline below represents postive, significant moments in our district's history.

  • 1883
    1883

The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. ~ Aristotle

Yellowstone County was created in June 1883 and divided into 6 school districts, including Canyon Creek School District #4 and Billings School District #2. The original Canyon Creek School was located at the town of Canyon Creek, north of the present building and eight miles west of the original Newman school with Mrs. Sam Salsbury as the first teacher.

  • 1920 - 1940

1920's... Small school districts south of the Yellowstone River joined District #4 (Clubhouse, Duck Creek, Pleasant View, and others). The district as we know it today includes all of these smaller school districts. The general consensus is that the name “Canyon Creek” was likely used because the school sat adjacent to the Canyon Creek Ditch Company irrigation ditch. Also, Canyon Creek is the only body of water running through the original school district north of the Yellowstone River.

1940’s... A two-room Canyon Creek School was constructed on the old Laurel Road. When the interstate was constructed, the building was divided in two and moved south. It is now two identical homes on the South Frontage road..

  • 1950 - 1970

1959... The first school was built at the present location on Duck Creek Road. It consisted of a kitchen, three classrooms and a library---the far south end of the building (currently music, central offices, and Title I).

1962... Two classrooms and a kitchen were added to the original building (our current offices and kindergarten rooms).

1969... Four more classrooms, restrooms, teachers’ room, and office were added. Also the cafeteria and kitchen were expanded.

  • 1980's

1980... Canyon Creek School grew to over 150 students and hired its first principal, Zara Frank. Prior to this time, the lead teacher and district clerk performed all administrative duties. Frank began as a ½ time principal and ½ time music teacher. Her last four years were as a full-time principal. During her tenure, building and staff additions enabled the District to add a qualified junior high.

1981... Six additional classrooms were added to the east side of the newest addition. This addition has become known as the “junior high wing.” At the same time, remodeling of the entire school for greater energy efficiency occurred. New energy efficient windows were installed, the building was bermed on the outside, and new carpet was installed. The remodeling also created an office area, space for the copy machine, and a staff room.

1986... A section of modular classrooms, the “annex,” containing four rooms was purchased to house two classrooms and the library.

1987... The student population reached a level that required the District to hire a ½ time superintendent. Fred Kimball was hired to serve as the first principal/superintendent.

1989... Carol Wright became the second principal/superintendent in 1989. Wright supervised further development of our curriculum and the addition of our gymnasium.

  • 1990's

1990... A garage was built to serve as a maintenance shop and to provide storage for maintenance equipment and cleaning supplies.

1991... The gym addition was completed. This addition included a large lobby area, concessions room, and two additional restrooms.

1992... The district purchased two additional acres of land on the east side of our property.

1993... Roy Warner became the third superintendent. He served the district for seven years and was pivotal in developing our technology program, utilizing computers for student learning.

  • 2000's

2000... Dr. Anne Shearer-Shineman took over as Superintendent in 2000. During her tenure, the district developed a security plan for the district and led the community in planning and completing a major addition to the building.

2003... The “new wing” addition of 15,000 square feet provided three new classrooms, bathrooms, computer lab, library, cafeteria, and kitchen. The old “annex” building was tied into the new wing and put to new use as classrooms and a staff room. Additionally, all asbestos was removed from the entire building, and all rooms received new paint and carpet.

2004... Stephanie Long became our fifth superintendent and was instrumental in the revision/development of our curriculum to better align with state standards. Under her leadership, the board wrote and adopted a Strategic Plan for the District. She also led a legal challenge which resulted in the repayment of approximately $100,000 in restitution from three former employees.

2009... Brent Lipp became the sixth superintendent. He has continued the process of curriculum development and assisted the trustees in the revision of the Strategic Plan. He led the charge to renovate and pave the parking lot areas.

2010... The district completed a long-awaited parking lot renovation and paving project.
